Terminal 7 at JFK International Airport has undergone a massive $65 million redesign by British Airways over the past year…
The New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) has sponsored a CityBench initiative to provide an increased amount of public seating to New York City residents and visitors. So far, the program has assisted in the creation of 1,500 benches across New York’s five boroughs. By 2019, there will be 600 additional benches installed.
The Durst Organization was inspired by NYC DOT’s initiative and worked to redesign the 1155 Avenue of the Americas’ Plaza, a commercial building located at the corner of 6th Avenue and 44th Street. Major tenants in the building include the Dow Jones (Wall Street Journal) and White & Case. The building is ENERGY STAR® certified.
In the fall of 2015, Concreteworks East partnered with the Durst Organization for the second time to assist in the complete redesign of the outdoor Plaza entrance. The architect on the project was Studio Architects.
Concreteworks East fabricated custom precast benches, which also served as planter walls for the landscaped areas. The project was fabricated using our “Uptown White” color. We used a GFRC mix for a lighter weight, but stronger product. The project presented a few challenges that we had to overcome. The unique curved and linear shapes of the benches required us to creatively coordinate with the varying heights of site conditions.
The finished project revealed beautifully unique and modern benches that provide ample seating for New York City residents and visitors.
